Alluring and timeless, the smoky eye is the little black dress of the make-up world. Here's how to win at this perennial beauty classic – with a little help from Bobbi Brown.

Finding the shades that comprise your perfect smoky eye is a simple task with the new Deluxe Eye & Cheek Palette, exclusive to John Lewis & Partners. Its comprehensive selection of 12 flattering eyeshadow shades has everything you need for day or night, while the double-sided design also houses two skin-warming bronzers, two natural blushes and a dual-ended eyeshadow/eyeliner brush.

Step one: Foundation and concealer

Start by applying Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF15, which won’t budge all evening thanks to a long-lasting formula that stays put for up to 16 hours. Brighten eyes with Instant Full Cover Concealer – dot beneath the eyes and blend to disguise dark circles and enhance eye make-up.

Step two: Eyeshadow and eyeliner

The Deluxe Eye & Cheek Palette offers the perfect selection of shades to create a classic smoky eye. Press the Ivory eyeshadow all over lids – this will even discoloration and create a base. Layer Slate from lashes to the crease for a subtle shadow. Add drama by applying the Espresso shade to the lash line using an eyeliner brush – buff upwards and outwards with an eyeshadow brush for a smokier look. Shimmery eyeshadow gives that essential party finish: Velvet Plum is perfect for all over the lid, while Spotlight is great to use in the inner corner of the eyes to open and brighten them. Layer up Smokey Eye Mascara for a false-lash effect.

Step three: Eyebrows

Well groomed eyebrows can change your whole look and frame your face. Use the Perfectly Defined Long Wear Brow Pencil to fill in any gaps, following the natural shape of your brows with light, feathery strokes.

Step four: Blush and highlight

Add a pop of blush on the cheeks using one of the pink shades from the Deluxe Eye & Cheek Palette, then layer on highlights with the palette’s Illuminating Bronzing Powder in Golden Pink.

Step five: Lips

Finish your look with a slick of a nude Luxe Matte Lip Color – try Nude Reality, Boss Pink or Tawny Pink.
