As the weather starts to cool down and the days get shorter, here are four tips on how to layer in style

Summer is almost over and it's time to start thinking about how to dress for the new season. Just before that, though, comes the tricky ‘trans-seasonal’ phase: when it’s not quite cold enough to get your winter coat out, but definitely not warm enough to leave the house without a jumper or lightweight jacket. Layering, done correctly, can be a fashion statement in and of itself. Here’s how to do it practically and stylishly.

1.

Get familiar with the shacket

The shacket (shirt-jacket, get it?) is becoming a style staple. Also known as a workwear or utility jacket, this failsafe and casual must-have is perfect for those tricky in-between days. Wear open and pair with anything from loose shirts and T-shirts to sweatshirts and rain macs.

2.

Don’t fear the open shirt

No, we don’t mean open-to-your-belly-button with torso on show. We mean loose-fitting shirts worn completely unbuttoned with a simple T-shirt underneath. Easy to throw in a bag, perfect to smarten up a daytime outfit for the evening and ideal for layering with the aforementioned shacket.

3.

Reinvent the zip-down

A half-zip or zip-down jumper can often have stuffy connotations, but not if it’s worn the right way. Much like the open shirt, it’s an understated basic that can be added to almost any outfit and layered up easily. For a zip-down hoodie, pair with a simple tee. For a cardigan, try mixing it up with a polo shirt or short-sleeve shirt and, to add structure, pair both with a tailored blazer or overcoat.

4.

Learn about fabrics

The art of lightweight layering is all about the fabric. It sounds simple, but it’s important. At this time of year, it’s best to avoid anything with wool or cashmere in it and stick to cotton, linen, rayon or a super-lightweight denim. Adding multiple layers made out of these lighter materials will ensure you don’t overheat.
