Reached a bump in your search for the perfect winter wedding outfit? We’re here to help

Winter tends to go by in a hazy blur of cocktail parties, after-work drinks, family gatherings and winter weddings, leaving little time to carefully choose what to wear to look your very best. And, while spontaneous post-work pub sessions may be a little harder to plan outfits for, it definitely pays to prep ahead of time for big events like a winter wedding. No idea where to start? Let our simple guide lead the way.

1. Follow the dress code

As obvious as it may sound, it’s imperative to adhere to the dress code on the invitation. And if there isn’t one? Ask. You don’t want to be the red-faced guy in a casual suit while the rest of the guests are wearing black tie. For formal weddings, you’ll be told whether black tie or morning dress is preferable and for casual ones, you’ll have the chance to add your own twist to a classic two-piece.

2. Invest wisely

If you’re in the market for anything new, from a tailored overcoat right down to a tie, make sure that you’re thinking clearly about what you have in your social calendar for the rest of the season. Investing in pieces that you can wear over and over again – rather than buying a single item you’ll only wear once – is a no brainer, as well as being better for the planet.

3. Focus on fabrics

Winter lends itself to thick, authentically British fabrics, so focus on heavy wool, flannel, tweed and – for timeless style combined with cosy substance – a cashmere blend. To really raise the bar, pick up a velvet tuxedo for an instantly luxurious feeling.

4. Add points of difference

In a room where everyone else is, by and large, wearing the same thing, add a point of difference to your outfit. For casual weddings, be playful with the prints and colours that you pick: choose boldly printed ties and pocket squares, checked suits or stand out tones to break up your outfit. For more formal occasions, use texture in ties, pocket squares and outerwear.
