Bust a move: why cleavage is big news

the return of the cleavage

With party season looming it’s time to say hello again to the low-cut top and plunging neckline – the bust is back!

Remember that underwired bra you left to languish at the back of your knicker drawer 18 months ago? It’s time to bring it back from the dead. At least, it might be time to reconsider your support system because boobs are back.

In the last couple of weeks, ample cleavages have graced red carpets (thanks Beyoncé) and magazine covers (witness Adele on the front of British Vogue sporting a sunshine yellow Vivienne Westwood). Not to mention Instagram feeds, as everyone from catwalk designers to mere mortals re-entering the party scene have ensured the bust’s status as fashion’s new focal point.

The well-rounded development comes a year after easy-to-wear underwear and athleisure-inspired-bras emerged as the nation’s favourite and preempts a Christmas party season that is all about getting back ‘out there’ (go figure). But do we really have to squash ourselves into a corset to join in the fun, or is there a more laid-back way with which to celebrate this literal return to form?

A skinny-fit bodysuit – or knit with a sweetheart neckline – is cleavage-celebrating attire for those who prefer their fashion with a side of comfort. Team with a trouser style of your choice – an extra-wide leg is a great way to level out proportions – and an underwired bra, of course. Well, they do say the only way is up.
