The key to feeling your best in swimwear is picking a style to suit your shape

John Lewis & Partners proudly relaunched its swimwear for summer 2019. Overseen by the lingerie design team, the result is a collection of carefully conceived pieces to flatter and sculpt. Here, two of our Personal Stylists explain exactly how to pick the one for you.

Start from the top down

Sian Clarke, who styles customers at the John Lewis & Partners Oxford Street store, always advises those with broad shoulders to opt for a classic, thin-strap bikini. ‘It doesn’t draw attention to the area and creates a soft break in your shoulders,’ she explains. If you are petite on top, she says a strapless style is the most flattering.

Support acts

Busty? ‘Then go for a V-neck,’ says Sian. ‘But be careful not to opt for too deep a plunge as this will compromise on support.’ Those seeking cup support should look to specialist Freya, which goes from a 32D to a 36G.

If you’re conscious of your bust being on the smaller side, ‘try a sculpted top or a higher neckline, such as a halterneck,’ says Sian. Lucy Knight, a Personal Stylist at the White City store, is championing the current trend for swimwear featuring knotted details. ‘They are ideal for customisation, allowing you to alter the look and feel of your swimsuit, and enabling you to make it bespoke to your body shape.’

The new two-piece

If you’re looking for an alternative to an all-in-one or low-rise bikini, then a high-waisted two-piece could be the answer. ‘They are flattering to both those with small waists and those who might be conscious of their stomach,’ says Sian.

Ladylike and with a touch of retro glamour, a high-rise style also sculpts a more feminine silhouette out of even the most athletic of physiques. For those wanting to cover up their middle section, Sian’s money is on a swimming costume with side ruching. ‘This draws attention to your waist, and the ruching detail will smooth over any lumps and bumps.’

Embrace print and colour

Lucy cites animal prints, florals and polka dots as current key trends for swimwear. Florals naturally feel feminine while spots – big or small – are certain to endure for many summers to come. If you’re tempted by animal print and want to start small, try a two-piece to lessen the impact.
