Still deciding what to wear this Christmas Day? Will you dress up or keep it low key? We asked some of our favourite fashion editors and bloggers how they’ll be styling it this year

‘There has to be something fabulous and fun in my Christmas Day outfit, but it needs to be tempered by a comfy element. I think we need to keep traditions especially close to us after such a tumultuous year and I always follow the high/low formula for Christmas Day dressing, so I’ll be mixing something glamourous and smart with something more casual and comfortable. My immediate family is very small so this year’s gathering won’t be curtailed by Covid restrictions (I hope) and I’ll be wearing a variation of my usual uniform. This means I’ll go for a statement top (usually layered over a fine polo-neck because it is still winter) and a pair of velvet jeans or a mini-skirt with opaque tights, both of which are cosy enough to curl up on the sofa in once the dishwasher is loaded.’

‘There haven’t been many occasions to dress up this year so Christmas Day will be my ultimate excuse. But dressing up means a smarter take on cosy – a Whistles midi-length knit dress with extra jewellery. And in keeping with my lounge-at-home vibe I’ll be teaming it with Birkenstocks and socks.’

‘I will probably be wearing a dark blue velvet boiler suit from NRBY as it’s the most made-an-effort-but-without-any-cost-to-my-comfort piece of clothing I own right now. It’s perfect for being horizontal on the sofa or for dancing on the kitchen table – so you’ve got options, depending on how the day goes.’

‘It wouldn’t be Christmas without some sparkle. I intend on getting even more glammed up than usual this year and will be wearing a beautiful green sequin co-ord from Whistles. I love that I can wear it three ways, it’s so versatile. That said, once the Christmas pudding and custard goes down I’ll swiftly slip into something more comfortable and have just the velvet jumpsuit. Still chic, but all the cosy – perfect for settling down on the sofa for a Christmas film!’

‘Even though I’m just at home with my family, I like to feel special, but not uncomfortable – there’s something quite decadent about getting dressed up and not leaving the house. My outfit nearly always involves a polo-neck knit and some kind of festive bow or hairband. Last year I wore a kilt which I loved for its cosy, heritage feel. Of course, by the evening, the hairband is off and the PJ bottoms are on but it’s the thought that counts.’

‘We’ll be at home up in Scotland and I’ll definitely be dressing down. I’ll be wearing a big alpaca Fair Isle jumper, comfy low-waisted skinnies, hand-knitted socks and the new super-cosy clogs from Birkenstock. And for an afternoon walk, it’s on with my fave Grenson Nanettes, woolly hat (another hand knit) and Röhnisch long puffer coat, a heritage Swedish brand that knows how to dress for the cold.’

‘Now more than ever it feels important to celebrate an occasion with dressing up. Personally, I am all about a high-low mix. The high being something totally decadent like sumptuous velvet trousers (an elasticated waistband is preferable here) with a silk top. When it comes to accessories, I take a Christmas tree approach where more is more: some kind of grand hair accessory and layers of gold jewellery. My low comes in the form of footwear. Typically, this look might be better sported with a pair of spindly heels, but I like to round it off with sheepskin slippers – it makes for easier dancing around the kitchen to the Christmas crooners.’

‘I’ll definitely be dressing up this year for Christmas – I’m cooking so will be up early and will plan in 20 mins to straighten my hair, put on a red lipstick and shimmy into a frock. If I’ve put that much effort into the meal, I want it to feel special. My mum is also with me this year and she’s a stickler for dressing up for occasions – though I’m sure we’ll both slope off into our loungewear as soon as we’re finished.’

‘I imagine Christmas Day will involve multiple costume changes for me because if you can’t be extra at Christmas, then when can you? I’ll definitely staying in my festive pyjamas for most of the morning to help prep for Christmas lunch, then changing into something a bit more dressed up with sparkles for food and drink, I plan on going all out with heels and makeup too! Then back to loungewear for finishing off the day with holiday movies on the couch.’

‘After I get out of my Chrimbo pyjamas, there is one word to summarise my outfit… sparkles. That means sequins – shiny and glam, while also making sure I'm comfortable. So it will probably be a sequined top and a pair of wide-legged trousers, with my signature glitter eyes. We are sadly unable to spend the day with all of our loved ones, so I want to make it as festive and feel-good as possible.’

‘With a limited amount of opportunities to get dressed up, I’m embracing the opportunity to spend this Christmas in effortless loungewear, but with a festive touch, of course. Pyjama-like pieces that can pass for daywear will be my go-to, from silky matching sets in joyful prints to cosy cashmere sweaters that feel more elevated than my current uniform of grey joggers and hoodies. To add some sparkle, I’ll look to diamond studs or pearl hoop earrings and layer up my wrists with the bracelet charms I’ve barely worn all year. A velvet bow to tie up my ponytail makes a special addition too, especially if I do pop out for those Christmas cocktails.’
