Forget cutting things out – a new year is all about embracing maximalism (bring on the colour)

A new year is, for me, a fresh start. I’m afraid I’m one of those people who likes to take down the decorations on 1 January so the house is clear and ready for the start of a brand new chapter. Not one for resolutions, it’s more about setting intentions – and for 2024 I intend to make sure I honour my maximalist tendencies and embrace the colour joy.

Here is my personal happiness-seeking colourful edit for 2024 from John Lewis. Happy new year!

Fashion

‘I’m not sure what it is about dressing gowns and robes that I love so much, but I wear them like house coats over loungewear. This print is so lovely and my top tip is to size up.’

‘This gorgeous Cape Cove coat is designed to be worn after swimming or at the beach, but it’s so warm and cosy I will be wearing it on dog walks, football sidelines and for general life duties.’

‘I’m always looking for stylish ways to stay warm on the dog walk and I love handwarmers. They let me choose the podcast I’ll listen to, throw the ball and sort out the dog, all while allowing me to add another colour to my look.’

‘If you can’t see the sunshine, be the sunshine. This acid-yellow jumper is the perfect way to stay warm and put a smile on your face. Team with other bold shades for a proper dopamine hit.’

‘Cosy and chic is how I intend to be during the first chilly weeks of January. This jumper is a classic style, but I love the slouchy shape.’

Home

‘These portable table lamps are so midcentury in their look and I love all the colours. They will be perfect to add a bit of light to my children’s bedrooms.’

‘Stripes are one of those prints that I mix with everything, in interior design or outfit choices. This bold green cushion would look amazing mixed with other strong shades and prints.’

‘I have fallen in love with the Flora range and bought a few pieces from it already. I love the simplicity of the design and the mix-and-match-ability of the collection.’

‘Layering is my thing with outfits and in my home. While some layers on the sofa are there to protect it from muddy dog paws, a gorgeous throw will always be tempting to wrap up in for TV sessions with the family.’

Beauty

‘A great red lipstick will give your face a splash of colour even if you don’t have anything other makeup on – and this ultra-matt by Nars will go the distance.’

‘This device is so clever, allowing you to dry and style in one go. It would reduce my hair prep time and that’s a new year intention I’d enjoy.’

‘I’m obsessed by beauty tech – anything that takes your skincare seriously works for me. During the dark months without sunshine, this LED mask will give my skin some much-needed light.’
