How the cardigan found its cool

Cardigans are cool

The humble cardi is now a trans-seasonal wardrobe essential

The cardigan has been cast in a variety of roles over the years – school uniform, mainstay of your granny’s wardrobe, abandoned afterthought left strewn across the back of your office chair – but it’s never really courted style status… until now. The cosy button-up has emerged as a trans-seasonal style staple with credibility in its corner this season.

The transformation was encouraged by famous cardi wearers Kaia Gerber (above) and Katie Holmes, who serve as accidental ambassadors for the humble knit. In its new guise, the cardi is a wardrobe staple that can add elegance to a low-key look. Whether you wear it slung over a silk cami with jeans or coupled with a printed dress, the cardi has shed its frumpy image.

And when it comes to choosing the one that’s right for you, the possibilities are endless. Fans of the cottagecore trend should experiment with pretty pastels and ruffle trims, while those who wince at anything twee are bound to love neutrals. A slouchy oversized style is perfect paired with washed-out denim and a classic T-shirt (the ultimate WFH look), while a neat cashmere looks super elegant layered over a slip dress. Your nana will be so proud.
