Camel: your perfect alternative to grey this winter

Camel is to fashion what light grey has become to interiors: a classic hue that is both foolproof, effortlessly elegant and a natural canvas. But while sporting grey can often echo the bleak and wintry skies above, the camel trend exudes a luxurious and luminous warmth while being the perfect partner to staples like black and navy.

How to wear the camel trend? Invest in a wool-mix camel coat in a simple silhouette – widely considered to be one of the most enduring purchases you can make. Its appearance on the catwalks is so prolific that it has transcended trend-worthy status. Penny Goldstone, digital fashion editor at Marie Claire, has been on the hunt for the ultimate camel coat ‘for a few seasons now, purely because it’s a timeless piece that if I get right, will last me for seasons to come. The perfect coat for me is ankle length and minimal, with slightly masculine tailoring to make it look extra chic.’

But it doesn’t start and end there; fashion writer and Instagram influencer Katherine Ormerod is a champion of camel in all its forms. Her feed is peppered with inspiration for how to wear the trend: look out for funnel-neck sweaters and pleated midi skirts in delicious shades of biscuit and oatmeal – often worn together. ‘I love it tonally, head to toe,’ she explains. ‘There is just nothing chicer, as it suggests you don’t live a life where spills, sticky children’s fingers or general clumsiness feature – which is my dream rather than my reality!’
