The pick of what to wear for late holidays, long weekends and early-autumn days and evenings

The nights are drawing in and autumn, with all of its fresh starts and new term obligations, is well on its way. But there’s plenty of high jinks left to be had before the sun retreats completely. What to wear to embrace this time? Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extra-long lunch, here’s how to ensure you celebrate the changing seasons in style.

Plan for a picnic in the park

You’ve heard of ‘blue sky thinking’ but what about ‘green space dressing’? Certainly, getting set for an afternoon in the park is a pursuit that’s as British as the picnic itself. If your weekend plans involve a game of rounders played on a manicured lawn, followed by a Scotch egg and a round of egg mayonnaise sandwiches, an easy, breezy linen dress is the place to begin. Something that is unmistakably daywear, but brings a hint of drama via an oversized sleeve or interesting structure is even better. Delicate jewellery that makes a quiet statement will help to add impact.

What to take into autumn: It’s never too late to invest in the perfect pair of sunglasses. In fact, it’s during the autumnal months that a stylish pair of shades can really come into their own. Think about versatile styles that will look as good with your favourite oversized knit as they do with your perfect picnic dress.

Bring the carnival spirit home

Taking its lead from this year’s virtual Notting Hill Carnival, the country is set to continue with its new-found aptitude for hi-tech fun with online celebrations at the heart of many of this year’s end-of-season festivities. Staying at home doesn’t have to mean missing out on the festival atmosphere. Lead from your sofa in kaleidoscopic colours. Try a loose-fitting long dress that will pack a punch on your Zoom shindig. Trainers are essential for the inevitable garden disco that will follow.

What to take into autumn: A decent denim jacket – think high-quality fabric and a timeless fit – will never go out of style. It’s also the perfect transitional cover-up.

Prepare to shine on the beach

Coasting into a long weekend? You’ll need a dynamic outfit to see you through. After all, a day at the Great British seaside is one loaded with surprises, with everything from glorious sunshine to high winds and hailstorms all part of the fun. A pair of denim shorts will provide a solid foundation. Opt for a longer, Bermuda length and team with an oversized shirt for a look that’s rooted in 2020. Brave staycationers will also need to pack their bathers – Sweaty Betty’s offering of costumes is ideal – alongside their bucket and spade.

What to take into autumn: Superga’s classic white plimsolls are not the most edgy, but as a fail-safe sneaker choice that works with almost every outfit, they never get old.

Dress up for a lazy lunch

You’ve nabbed the best table in the beer garden for a long, luxurious lunch with your friends and now you need an outfit to match. It’s time to go all out. A vibrant print – see Ghost’s heart motif dress – is a fine way to mark the occasion. And why not throw caution to the wind and wear some heels? That pair of thong-toe sandals you’ve been longing to step out in all summer will do nicely. Muted accessories, such as a tonal clutch bag and some low-key jewellery, will go down beautifully with a perfectly cooked Sunday roast. Cheers!

What to take into autumn: Astrid and Miyu’s on point necklaces and ear cuffs are the quiet accessory statement that will lift any low-key look.

Get kitted out for a day trip

Whether your plans include hanging with the monkeys at the zoo or visiting the grounds of your nearest stately home with the kids in tow, big days out demand flexible wardrobe options. Shorts are a fine place to start and a style with an elasticated waistband and an aesthetic that’s rooted in sportswear are this season’s winning option. Team with a loose fitting T-shirt and your favourite pair of Birkenstocks. A sweatshirt is also a smart move as the temperature begins to drop – you can’t go wrong with grey marl.

What to take into autumn: For your toddler’s array of ‘essential’ items, or a full outfit change should you decide on a whim to hit the pub on the way home, a grown-up backpack is a power accessory for the modern woman.
