If you’re going away for the long weekend, pack hard-working pieces that’ll work from sightseeing to cocktails

Another bank holiday is almost upon us, and if you’re fortunate enough to be jetting off somewhere for a long weekend, then you’ll be thinking about what to pack. Whittling down the mere essentials into a carry-on bag can feel like a mammoth task. After all, what will the weather be like? Will you end up in a smart restaurant? And what if it’s chilly in the evenings? A clever edit that effortlessly covers off almost all eventualities is what’s needed – and here’s how to do it.

Model in blue trousers and white top

Travel in something light but with sleeves, like a cotton shirt or blouse. This will protect you from fierce air-conditioning and feels relaxed while looking relatively smart. Wear with cropped chinos or jeans and throw on some chunky trainers.

Model in black Whistles jumpsuit

Planning a day of exploring? Consider a jumpsuit. More practical than a dress, a semi-tailored all-in-one will mean you can partake in a spontaneous hike or visit a holy place in attire that’s suitably respectful. Stay hands-free with a crossbody bag and don’t forget your sunglasses.

Model wearing green shorts and a blazer

If you’re sightseeing in the city, paperbag-waist shorts are a chic option. Opt for a linen, longline blazer on top and you’ll be protected from both the cool of shaded streets and the blast of the midday sun. A simple black vest will work with all your separates – pack a couple for easy outfits.

Model in blazer and printed skirt

Last but not least, inject a bit of pattern into your edit with a printed midi skirt. Elegant when worn with the aforementioned longline blazer, it’s just the ticket for cocktails at sunset, but equally versatile for a daytime look.
