Heading to the races? Here’s what to buy that you’ll actually wear again

Heading to the races? Here’s what to buy so you still look like you

Think sustainably, consider your bling and plan for the great British weather

Knowing what to wear to the races can be tricky for even the most stylish among us, with strict dress codes and stuffy traditions often adding up to an outfit you’ll only wear once. Buck the trend and invest in these key pieces you can wear in the Royal Enclosure while enjoying all that entails – then mix and match them throughout the rest of the year.

Look to the future

Even though Ascot is probably the most formal event in your calendar, you don’t want to splash out on a statement piece that will never come out of your wardrobe again. Choose carefully and you can make your new outfit work at weddings, garden parties and other shindigs for the rest of this summer and next. Don’t shy away from a trouser suit or jumpsuit – it’s 2023 and they can look just as elegant as a dress.

Accessories FTW

Nobody wants to be seen winching a sky-high stiletto out of the grass so a wedge or block heel is ideal for a day spent primarily on your feet. While certain enclosures have strict rules on headwear – like the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, where your headpiece has to be at least four inches in diameter – if you don’t have to wear a hat, you can get creative with bows, headbands and statement earrings.

Plan for every eventuality

Plan for every eventuality

A coat or jacket shouldn’t be an afterthought – especially for an event in GB. Investing in the right piece can make as much of a statement as the clothes underneath. Try layering over a long linen coat for both practicality and polish. The clean lines will keep things contemporary but classic enough for most enclosures, or opt for a punchy colour you’ll wear again.

Keep it classic

Race-day fashion is steeped in tradition so if you want to wear a hat, match your shoes to your handbag or wear that white co-ord you’ve had hanging up for years – this is your chance to go for it. We’d suggest sticking to a classic palette (monochrome, cream or navy) or try top-to-toe in the same tone for an instant style win.
