Think white jeans are just for summer? Our style columnist has other ideas - and five ways to style them for autumn

I was slow to embrace white jeans - I was put off by the bad sort, either horribly transparent or clingy enough to make me look vacuum-packed. But once I discovered the good sort… well, now there is no getting me out of them. They’re just as easy to chuck on in the morning as blue denim, but look much more polished. I wear mine so often that rather than mourn them at the end of summer, I keep on wearing them. They look expensive with shades of cream and camel, and bold against a black knit; I can wear them with white trainers or stompy boots.

I like my white jeans on the thicker side, but still with a bit of stretch, and high-waisted, so that they can easily look quite smart when I tuck something into them (but also, so that I never spend a moment tugging them up: I loathe jeans that are constantly drifting downwards). I wear them full length in lieu of tailoring, or roll them up at the weekend, and I like them off-white, rather than a bright optic shade that reminds me of teeth-whitening. I’ve found the perfect John Lewis & Partners pair, the perfect - and this video shows how I’ll be wearing them as the weather turns.
