The gilet: your cold weather secret weapon

Want to master layering? It’s easy with a gilet

Less cumbersome than a woolly jumper and versatile enough to be worn on its own on milder days, if you haven’t already cottoned on to the merits of the humble gilet, then it’s time to get on board.

This once purely practical staple used to exist only in the realm of acting as a ‘body warmer’ – a close-fitting layer to be slipped on under a coat or over a knit and exclusively favoured by hikers. But, as you might have noticed, the gilet has enjoyed a style-conscious makeover, with patchworked, shearling and quilted styles (as seen from Kin, pictured above) now so desirable you'll want to show them off at any opportunity.

‘Padded jackets and quilted outerwear is huge this season,’ says Lauren Jolly, Partner & Womenswear Buyer, ‘and these styles offer longevity into spring.’

So how do you pick the right gilet for you? If you’re looking to insulate a tailored wool coat, then a slimline, down-filled gilet is just the ticket to protect from the elements. If you’re after something to pop on over a jumper for the school run and short trips in the car, a shaggy or longline style will complement jeans. And if you like the idea of a waistcoat style to update your WFH attire, look for a shorter, boxy style to add a hint of cool to white shirts.
