6 thoughts we had while watching the John Lewis Christmas ad

John Lewis Christmas Ad

The John Lewis Christmas advert is here. And these are our first reactions

‘A banger from John Lewis and Bocelli. Truthfully, 2023’s ad didn’t make me cry – not much does – but it did warm my Christmassy cockles, and gave me sudden urges to snap up a Venus fly trap or five. Snaps all round.’

‘The cutest since Edgar (my for ever prince). I love a Christmas advert with a bit of bite – plus an earworm upgrade courtesy of top tenor Andrea Bocelli. Family and friends, look away now because everyone’s getting Snapper for Christmas this year. I can’t promise yours will spit out more gifts, though.’

‘I’m putting it out there – I love Snapper. He’s so fun and the silliness is what we all need right now. My kids were genuinely delighted to see Snapper trash the house and wanted to watch the ad on repeat – needless to say they’ll both be getting a Snapper soft toy this December.’
Lucy, Senior Editor

‘I will cry at most things, John Lewis Christmas ads very much included. But Snapper, as adorable as he is, did not stir up any tears in me. I will say that the world could do with a bit of his hilarious energy and he delivered. So for that, I thank you, Snapper.’

Snapper: The Perfect Tree has made me believe. Made me believe that I can grow a plant from tiny seed to healthy specimen with little more than self-belief and a bit of Christmas magic. And that's the power of the John Lewis Christmas advert. 11/10 (the extra point is for the inclusion of the Pomeranian).’

‘As a boy being dragged around a garden centre, Venus fly traps were the one thing keeping me from mindnumbing boredom. They were cool nearly 40 years ago and they still are today – that’s a hill I'm willing to die on. Now that I’m of the age when I'll voluntarily suggest a “family trip to Dobbies for some more decorative bark”, I can actually go and buy one. Result.’
