SPOTLIGHT ONDENBY

Spotlight on Denby
Jennifer Morgan,-Interiors Editor

From the potter’s wheel to the shop floor at John Lewis, loving care and attention goes into every single piece of Denby pottery

For more than 200 years, Denby has combined hardy Derbyshire clay with secret glazes to create beautiful tableware, ovenware and serveware. But it’s not just good looks that have helped build this British brand’s legacy. ‘Everything at Denby has to be both beautiful and functional,’ says Hayley Baddiley, Global Marketing Director at Denby. ‘Each piece has been designed to be used every day, whatever the occasion.’

And that’s why it takes two weeks for each Denby piece to be created and to pass through the processes needed before its final quality check. Every item is touched by 20 pairs of hands, using skills and techniques passed down through generations.

Loved, trusted and proudly British, Denby also shares many qualitites with John Lewis, so when its tableware buyers visited the pottery, a conversation about a collaboration on an exclusive collection seemed natural. The result? Quartz Rose, which has been a favourite since its launch in 2019.

And the Denby/John Lewis story doesn’t stop there…

Meet the new Quartz Jade collection. It’s inspired by the trend for biophilic interior design (connecting your home to the natural world), hand-crafting and organic materials. ‘The tones of Quartz Jade emanate from the iridescent look of its namesake gemstone, which is a symbol of serenity, purity and harmony,’ explains Hayley. ‘The multi-tonal jade palette suits modern and classic interiors, varying from a deep rich to light green with a hint of white.’

‘Denby’s style is constantly evolving as experimenting with glaze effects is at the heart of our designs,’ explains Richard Eaton, Head of Design at Denby.

Quartz Jade works perfectly with its sister Quartz Rose. Both collections also include items that are great to keep out in the kitchen, such as the jugs, which are as decorative as they are functional.

You can also set the mood with fragrances, using scented candles and ceramic reed diffusers from Denby, also made in England.

‘We always knew the green hues would come later,’ says Nicola Hattersley, Partner & Buyer, Tabletop. ‘Quartz Jade is a fit for us, not just from a trend point of view but also in terms of sustainability. Being able to work with a British company that is reducing its carbon footprint is very exciting.’
