Living simply and living well honours nature, craftsmanship and a sense of community, inspiring a welcoming and nurturing home

With us all spending more time indoors over the last year, connecting with the natural world has been wonderful for providing a sense of comfort and security. Like taking one huge, calming breath, it simply feels right.

The popularity of nature retreats has surged in recent years, places where you can turn off the tech and enjoy simple pleasures, with yurts, treehouses and cabins all promising a simpler life, even if just for a night or two. Natural materials such as wood, stone and linen can bring a similar sense of peace to your home, transforming it into a restorative sanctuary.

Our Modern Country trend celebrates this connection to simple pleasures, crafts and rituals. The materials are honest and utilitarian – the traditional kitchen is a big influence on this look, with its combination of natural and painted wood alongside chalky finishes. Growing produce, home baking and a sense of self-sufficiency slow the pace and feed body and soul – it is both self-care and something we can take pleasure in sharing with others.

‘The colours in this palette are deeply rooted in the natural world, taking influence from the skies and landscapes that surround us,’ says Melanie Archer, Partner & Designer, Home. ‘These tones are both familiar and comforting.’

Checks and Stripes are really having a moment. Layer them up and pair with accent two-tone prints or keep things simple, adding depth with a rich-coloured wool throw
