What we’re watching, craving and obsessing over this week
Let the knitwear alone persuade you to get on board with the latest stream of dreams, the screen adaptation of Sarah Perry’s richly emotional bestseller, The Essex Serpent. While knitters of the world get busy reverse engineering leading lady Clare Danes’ sensational puff sleeve rollneck, the rest of us can marvel at her nuanced depiction of Cora, a widow navigating her grief and newfound freedom. An amateur naturalist, she moves to Aldwinter to study the ‘serpent’ that villagers believe is snatching the sinful from their shores, and in doing so tests the faith of local vicar Will, deftly played by Tom Hiddleston. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, consider the immersive windswept scenery the next best thing to an actual mini-break in Essex (if you swerve the Sugarhut, that is).

Further reason to give your kids the ‘you were lucky chat’ as iconic Norwegian furniture designer Stokke turns its attention to upgrading your offspring’s inflight experience. The JetKids BedBox Travel Bed Suitcase makes up for its lack of correct punctuation, by transforming from a ride-on suitcase into a flat bed that fits neatly into an airline economy seat, making long and short haul flights less tortuous and more conducive to napping.
Fashion meets function with this towelling poncho by Cape Cove. The perfect addition to your packing list this summer, you’ll soon wonder how you ever lived without it. Throw it on for a post-swim lunch, a pre-beach breakfast or just add it into the rotation of not-quite-sure-what-the-weather-will-do outfits.
Any parent will understand the frustration of spending time and money picking out clothes for little ones, only to have them grow out of it approximately 30 seconds later. Enter the Little Loop, a clothes rental and swapping forum for parents across the country where items that are sent in are professionally cleaned, mended and then rented out at a price reflective of their condition. Once they are used for good, they are recycled. A little loop, indeed.
The album of this summer has to be the incredible new record from Arcade Fire, which was released in early May. The Canadian band are well and truly back with a bang, with their sixth studio album – and arguably their best yet. If you’re looking for something easy and feel-good to play in every room and during every summer get together, this is it.
