The days might be getting longer, but it’s still cold out. From chic thermals and comfy throws to handy heaters and cosy cashmere, here’s how to stay snug till spring

Swathe yourself in cashmere

Nothing helps you beat a brisk wind or morning frost so effortlessly as cashmere, the ultra-tactile yarn that loves you back. ‘Comfy, luxurious and warm, cashmere is for me the ultimate must-have at this time of year,’ says fashion stylist Niki Brodie. ‘It’s so soft and non-scratchy and usually one layer is enough.’ A soft cashmere beanie and scarf add a warm but luxe lightweight layer. Go one further with a pair of soft cashmere socks or leg warmers. Stealth comfort in all its cosy glory. Want more inspiration? Read our guide to affordable cashmere.

Know it’s all about the base

As everyone from the Arctic trekker to the novice skiier understands, staying warm in the cold is all in the layering. John Lewis & Partners has a range of Heat-Gen thermals which cleverly retain the heat generated by your body (handily, they are also quick drying, have moisture-wicking properties and are anti-static). These hard-working pieces will blend with your everyday wardrobe too – ideal for layering under denim shirts, dungarees and sweaters.

Invest in a throw

Perhaps the most versatile home accessory, a well-picked blanket or throw is ideal for snuggling up with on the sofa on a chilly evening but works all year around. ‘A room can often feel cold and uninviting at this time of year. A simple and relatively cheap way to warm up a cold space is to add layers of texture by piling on cushions and furry throws,’ says Leigh Miller, interior stylist at The Wantroom. ‘You can update a room instantly by adding a pop of colour with a carefully selected throw, especially if your room is painted in cold hues of blue or grey.’ True words – a good throw will add a flash of warmth and softness to the soberest colour schemes.

Go all out for sheepskin

Stepping onto a soft, fluffy sheepskin rug as you emerge from bed definitely softens the blow of waking up. Whether in the bedroom, front room or slung over a kitchen chair or sofa, a sheepskin rug adds tactility and warmth to your home year round. ‘I love using sheepskins to add texture and cosiness to rooms,’ says Rebecca Lawson, Scandi interiors blogger at Malmo & Moss. 'We have them in our bedroom, living room and kitchen we have the draped over our dining chairs for a warm, rustic feel.’ And never underestimate the homely charm of a pair of no-nonsense sheepskin slippers or Birkenstocks. Say hooray for heaters

If you live in a drafty house, you may need an extra blast of heat. This is where portable heaters come in. But which one to choose? ‘A traditional fan heater is great for heating rooms quickly as they blow hot air around the space,’ says Phoebe Gatehouse, Buyer & Partner, small electricals. ‘For a more intense spot of heat, pick a ceramic heater – most of these have the added benefit of being silent when in use. An oil filled radiator will provide more lasting heat and will be more effective in a large space, and many have wheels for easy transportation between rooms. If you’re looking for an all-in-one solution, some fan heaters have variable hot and cold settings, while the top-of-the-range options may even include an air purifier or a humidifier to stop the air from drying out.’ Stay warm!
