Spanx was started in 1998 in Georgia, USA by Sara Blakely. Sara was inspired to start the shapewear company when she found that she couldn’t buy the footless, body-shaping tights she wanted to wear with a particular outfit. Spanx have gone on to build their company and ranges on this idea - creating shapewear solutions for women to wear with the most troublesome of outfits. Spanx aims to shape the world by focusing on their mission: ‘To help women feel great about themselves and their potential’. Endorsed by celebrities around the world, from Oprah Winfrey to Gwyneth Paltrow; Spanx have recently branched out into body-shaping swimwear and men’s underwear. Sara Blakely has also become a household name in the USA, having featured on a reality TV show with Richard Branson. As first runner-up, she won $750,000 on the show which was used to set up a charitable organisation, designed to help women globally through education and entrepreneurship.
