FROM COOL CAMPING AND FUN GARDEN GAMES TO AWESOME ART ACTIVITIES, HERE’S HOW TO KEEP THE KIDS OCCUPIED OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS
The holidays are here and that means some much-needed time away from routine for everyone. If your child has spent the last few months learning from home, the summer break is a chance to step out of the virtual classroom and slip into a more relaxed routine. And while we know the six weeks will be different this year with holidays abroad cancelled and more time and care taken around social gatherings and trips to the park, it’s still a chance for fun and freedom. Take inspiration from our guide to the best garden toys and outdoor summer activities for kids and our handy list below. Long may the warm weather continue.
Sleep under the stars
Camping is back, but only campsites where social distancing is possible are open (see Cool Camping for up-to-date details). Happily, you can also do it within the safety of your own garden – always a novelty for kids. Toasted marshmallows essential.
Head out for a walk
The National Trust has opened up advanced bookings for 130 of its gardens and parklands. Pack a picnic and ensure the kids have appropriate footwear – these sandals have been tried and tested by us and are perfect for walking, tree climbing and general scampering.
Go for an artful adventure
Galleries including The Tate, The National Gallery and the Victoria & Albert are opening their doors over the summer to welcome visitors in a safe, socially-distanced way. But you’ll need to book timed tickets in advance. Essential kit: a backpack.
Learn a ball game
Six weeks is enough to learn a new game – whether it’s badminton, cricket or tennis – with some clubs now offering kids’ classes. Children can also practise in the comfort of their own garden. Time for mum and dad to show off their racquet skills.
Get them on two wheels
Cycling became the pastime of lockdown and according to the Bicycle Association sales of bikes are booming (hello Tern foldable bikes). See Sustrans’ helpful list of traffic-free family rides, where the whole family can practise safely.
Enjoy the wonder of watercolour
A good quality box of watercolours and paper is a versatile gift for artistic kids. Seek inspiration from online tutorials and set a weekly task to paint whatever is around them. By the end of the holidays, they’ll have a portfolio.
Make them go boing
If you are spending time at home over the holidays, a trampoline is a worthy investment. As well as providing an excellent space for kids to let off steam, you can also benefit (bouncing is good for releasing tension and improving your cardiovascular health).
Install a swing
The classic appeal of a good old-fashioned rope swing never dulls. This one can be hung from any strong and tall tree in your garden and is somewhere for the kids to retreat when they want some time to themselves.
Play croquet
This traditional garden game, famous for its appearance in Alice In Wonderland, is more fun than you may think and can be easily picked up by kids from around five upwards. Handily, it also looks extremely pleasing on your neatly-mown lawn.
Bring watery fun to your garden
Unable to get to the waterpark this summer? No matter. This compact Aquaplay mountain lake will keep little ones entertained, and cool, for hours. No wristband or veruca plaster required.
