Why ‘jeans and a nice blouse’ is the outfit we’re on board with for autumn

High performing contemporary style is not about reinventing the wheel, but rather finding a combination that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is easy to pull together. It’s for this very reason that the most coveted look around right now takes us back to basics. Team your favourite pair of jeans with a really great blouse for a look you’ll love.

Bohemian rhapsody

Whether you opt for a ditsy floral or an abstract motif, the peasant blouse is going nowhere fast. Update it for autumn by incorporating 70s-inspired denim and a pair of decent ankle boots. For those who enjoy a retro vibe, layering chunky jewellery and incorporating suede accessories will work wonders.

Dawn till dusk

For those action-packed days when your diary includes everything from a team meeting, lunch with a friend and then dinner, to a post dinner drink to decompress from it all, a solid one-suits-all outfit is essential. Straight-cut denim is the perfect partner to a blouse with just the right amount of glamour. A pair of sleek stilettos (NB. always carry a pair of emergency flats in an overflow bag) are the icing on the cake. Seek out fuss-free prints for extra versatility.

It’s all in the proportions

Oversized smocks are a daunting proposition for many of us but with so many around this season it's worth experimenting with this look. The key to success is to play with proportions. Try teaming voluminous shapes with trousers with a super skinny cut. The addition of a chunky shoe – see hiking boots or a thick soled trainer such as this pair from Ganni – will ensure your look brings with it a contemporary edge that is anything but twee.

Smart casual 2.0

Who says sneakerheads can’t look smart? Since boxfresh white trainers cemented their position in our workwear wardrobes, we’ve long been on board with the idea that smart really can mean casual. Revamp your commuting classics with a pared back blouse and oversized denim. A simple cashmere sweater – worn sloped across the shoulders or layered on top – will complete this look.

No jeans, please

Not everyone is dedicated to denim. A hybrid track pant, or even a leather jogger, can be equally as functional. Certainly, the latter is a fine companion for a great blouse. For a sleek evening look try experimenting with textures. Glossy fabrics look great with prints. A pared back pair of heels will add elegance to a slouchy trouser style.
