Jewellery makes a great gift, but finding the perfect piece can be tricky. Our experts are here to help…

As every jewellery lover will testify, great gifts come in small packages. From statement costume rings to diamond earrings, different occasions call for different styles. Requiring minimal storage space, the way to a jewellery magpie’s heart is with something shiny and new, whether it’s an initial pendant to add to a chain necklace, or a multicoloured stone ring.

But where to start? Here, Elena Bergonzi, Partner & Jewellery Buyer, steers us through the current trends of note. And the only ‘rule’ to stick to when when gift-giving is observing the preferred metal of your giftee: are they a gold, rose gold or silver wearer? Get that right and you’ll definitely be on the right track.

Christmas jewellery gifts

Say it with pearls

In case you missed the memo, pearls are enjoying a comeback. This time around, imperfections in shape are being celebrated, so jaunty pendants and irregular-shaped drop earrings will win you style points. ‘They can be paired with a simple white tee for effortless chic, or a classic black slip dress for the ultimate festive party look,’ says Elena. No doubt Monica Vinader’s collection would score highly on any pearl admirer’s wish list.

Personalise it

‘You can’t go wrong with a classic piece of personalised jewellery to show someone they’re special,’ advises Elena. And the choice is plentiful: from alphabet studs to engraved rings, a personalised piece is the most affordable way to create something that is bespoke. And it doesn’t end there: look up Rachel Jackson’s birthstone necklaces and PDPAOLA’s Zodiac constellations for colourful pieces with meaning.

Make a statement

Shopping to a budget shouldn’t be a barrier to gifting a piece of bling. Costume jewellery, whether it’s an oversize resin bangle or a pair of rainbow-gem earrings, still packs an almighty punch. ‘These pieces can be layered to really stand out this season,’ says Elena. Just note if they already have a predilection for chunky necklaces or dangly earrings and buy into their preference.

Go unique with pre-loved pieces

If gifting more sustainably is on your agenda this Christmas, then your search ends with second-hand and vintage jewellery. As well as being charmingly unique, each piece is embedded with history that the giftee can have fun interpreting – whether that’s guessing at the sort of soiree the previous owner of her Art Deco-style earrings might have enjoyed, or wondering at the identity of the person on her new cameo ring. ‘There’s nothing cooler than opting for an easy-to-wear second-hand classic this Christmas,’ says Elena. ‘A brooch or a bracelet is an easy entry point.’
